4 Safety Tips For Ridesharing Services

With holiday parties and New Year's Eve right around the corner, you might be considering using a peer-based ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft. While getting a ride is as simple as using your smartphone to connect you with a nearby driver; using that same phone to keep you safe during your trip is just as simple. Keep these rider-safety tips in mind when you take your next trip.

1. Know who’s picking you up ahead of time.

When you book your ride, you should receive the driver’s name, photo, vehicle type, and license plate number. So, when the car arrives make sure that everything matches before you get into the car.

2. Wait in a safe place.

It may take a few minutes for your driver to arrive, so it’s important to wait in a safe place. Some ridesharing service apps will notify you when the driver has arrived so you can comfortably wait inside. But if you’re unable to wait inside, find a well-lit area that’s out of the way of vehicles and traffic.

3. Share your plans with friends.

Keep in contact with your friends. Let them know where you’re leaving from, where you’re going to, and when you’ve arrived. If available, use the “Share Your ETA” feature through the app so your friends can follow your route and know when to expect you.

4. Follow the map.

During your trip, use the ridesharing app to follow your route so you always know where you are.
